In D.B., et al. v. City of Stockton, et al., a settlement of $4.4 million dollars was recovered by the Law Office of Sanjay S. Schmidt and his co-counsel for the surviving children and mother of Antwaune Burrise, Sr., who was shot and killed on July 15, 2020, by Stockton Police Department Officers. Although Mr. Burrise was wanted for questioning by the police in relation to serious crimes, and he had led the police on two pursuits, Mr. Schmidt and his co-counsel litigated the case extensively and developed solid evidence that he did not pose an imminent threat of death or serious injury to the police officers or anyone else when he was shot. This case was turned down by at least three other civil rights attorneys before Mr. Schmidt agreed to take the case.
